Iowa The Next State To Ban Texting?

Comments Off

The next state to ban texting while driving could be Iowa. The measure also prohibits reading and sending text messages.

Warnings would be issued for the first year, no tickets. But, after that, drivers could face a $30 fine if caught driving while texting. If texting leads to an accident – which results in serious injury or death – the penalties are tougher. The fines would be $500 and $1000 respectively, along with a suspended license.

While the measure bans texting while driving, it allows the driver to pull over and send a text message.

The bill will return to the house for debate, after passing the senate with a vote of 44-6.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, texting is banned by all drivers in 19 states and the District of Columbia.
